上海南翔小笼馒头在上海已有一百多年的历史，小笼包被称为“馒头”，产于上海嘉定县南翔镇。《嘉定县县志》记载“……馒头有紧酵和松酵两种，紧酵以清水和面为主，皮薄馅多，南翔制最著，号为翔式……”

小笼讲究的是“皮薄，汁多，肉鲜味美，要得是看得雅，吃得香，皮总是半透明，吹弹欲破，却总也不破，精选优质猪肉，馅紧不松散，汤汁饱满，且鲜而不油腻，须现蒸现吃。所以要吃得美味花一点时间等一下还是值得的。皮上咬破一小口，吮干里面的汤汁，蘸醋，美味尽收于口中。
