HISTORY OF BELMONT ICELAND In 1956, Bel-Arena was built as a much smaller ice rink on Old County Road. By May of 1966, the rink had closed. In August, East Bay Iceland purchased the property and began extensive renovations. The rink floor was completely re-piped, a new header and refrigeration system was installed, and the lobby and office area was expanded and redesigned. Belmont Iceland opened for business on December 26, 1966. Belmont Iceland has hosted several skating clubs for figure skating, hockey, and speed skating. The Bay Area Speed Skating Association skated out of Belmont from 1969-1974. People from Sacramento and Santa Rosa to San Jose came to skate on the club’s sessions. The club sponsored a 5 mile (80 laps) classic held every year and ran car washes every Sunday morning to raise money for ice time. Over the years, many well known skaters have practiced in Belmont, including Peggy Fleming, Brian Boitano, and Debi Thomas. Competitive skaters still train at the facility, representing the Skating Club of San Francisco.
