Tax Overhaul Shelved, Lawmakers Turn To Expenditures

By Adam G. Kirk, published on July 27, 2011, in Business in Savannah.

In May, Governor Nathan Deal signed an $18.3 billion state budget adopted by Georgia lawmakers for the 2012 fiscal year. Although the budget offers a slight increase in spending over previous fiscal year, it cuts spending by state agencies by an average of 7 percent.

The budget was finalized quickly after lawmakers shied away from a major tax overhaul that would have benefitted businesses statewide. House Bill 388 would have reduced the state’s personal income tax rate from 6% to 4.6% in 2012 and again in 2013 to 4.55%, while doing away with many deductions and adding sales taxes. New sales tax increases would have included auto repair labor, private sale of cars, groceries, cigarettes and possibly gasoline, and a 7% communications tax on telephones, satellite and cable television and other communications services.

Don’t get burned when selling your principal residence

By Adam G. Kirk, published on May 28, 2005, in Savannah Morning News.

A surge in real estate prices has created significant equity in the principal residences of many people in our area. This equity creates tax exposure for those tempted to cash in on the gain in value of their principal residences.

When selling a principal residence, taxpayers should be sure to take advantage of the home sale gain exclusion provided by the Internal Revenue Code.

Tax talk: Exercise your right to appeal property assessments

By Adam G. Kirk, published on June 13, 2004, in Savannah Morning News.

So you just stopped reeling from preparing your 2003 income tax return. Unfortunately, your tax work for 2004 may not be complete. In late June, some Chatham County property owners will receive “change in value” notices from the Chatham County Board of Assessors (BOA). These notices inform property owners of the value the BOA will place on their property for taxation in 2004.

As the adage goes, there are few things so certain as death and taxes. Unlike death, however, taxpayers can appeal the BOA’s determination.
