MARLBOROUGH, N.Y. — Town Justice-elect Michael Kraiza has a law degree, but says he’ll be taking a state course on administering court cases in his new role as a town justice.
Kraiza, 54, an attorney, was unopposed in his bid for town justice in Tuesday’s election, receiving 2,264 votes to win a four-year term.
“When you get elected as a judge in New York state at a town level, they’ll send you to a judge school for a couple months,” he said. “People with a law degree are entitled to skip that school. I don’t want to skip it. I want to go there.”
Kraiza said the class will serve as a review session for areas of the law that he has not practiced since earning his law degree.
“In some of the other areas that I don’t regularly practice in, it’ll definitely be a review class, since that was back when I took my bar exam,” he said. “And the administration I expect to learn a lot about. Just because you work one side of the bench for 25 or 26 years, I think the other side of the bench is a whole other story.”
Kraiza, a Republican, was a first-time candidate for town justice.
A lifelong resident of the town, Kraiza graduated from Marlboro High School in 1976, received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Fairmont State College in West Virginia in 1980, and received his law degree from Whittier College School of Law in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1985.
He and his wife, Nancy, an elementary school teacher at West Point, have three children.
